How to connect ChatGPT or Claude to your vacation rental data

The safe way to connect ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI assistant to your vacation rental data is through a controlled connection scoped to your own account and read-only by default, never by pasting guest details, reservations, or financial records directly into a chat window.

Why copy-pasting into a chatbot is risky

Dropping an exported reservation report into a chat window has real downsides:

  • Guest names, contact details, and payment information leave your system with no access control.
  • Pasted data can't be taken back.
  • The export goes stale the moment you copy it.
  • Nothing scopes the assistant to your account when people share a device or chat history.

What a controlled connection looks like instead

A controlled connection lets the assistant query your live data through a defined interface, scoped to your account, revocable at any time, and read-only until you decide otherwise.

What is MCP, and why does it keep coming up?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems" (modelcontextprotocol.io, checked July 27, 2026). Your software vendor runs an MCP server that exposes a defined set of read or write capabilities, and any assistant that speaks the protocol, Claude and ChatGPT among them, can connect to it. The vendor decides what the assistant may see and enforces it on the server side, so the assistant never gets a database password or a data export.

When Anthropic, which created MCP, donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation in December 2025, it counted more than 10,000 active public MCP servers and more than 97 million monthly downloads of the Python and TypeScript SDKs, and named ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot among the AI products that had adopted it (Anthropic, checked October 19, 2026).

What can an assistant do with read-only access?

Most questions about your own rentals are reads: how this June compared to last June, which properties have open nights next month, what a repeat guest booked the last two visits. An assistant can answer them, and draft an owner update or a rate-review checklist, from live data instead of a stale export.

What should you check before connecting any assistant?

  • Scope. Your account's data only, enforced by the server.
  • Direction. Read-only first, with write access as a deliberate opt-in.
  • Revocation. You can cut access instantly from the software side.
  • Guest data handling. Know what the assistant's vendor retains from queries.
  • Who can connect. Know which staff may attach an assistant.

Lodgix's approach

Connect your own AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, or any MCP client) to your Lodgix data through the Lodgix MCP Server. Read access comes as standard, and opt-in write access lets your assistant answer guests, send payment links, block dates, cancel reservations, and assign housekeepers for you. You switch it on yourself in your account settings.

What your assistant can do with write access

  • Guest messaging. Read a conversation, log a new inquiry, and send the reply through the guest's booking channel.
  • Billing and payments. Email a secure payment link for failed payments and overdue balances, add or update invoice extras, and record refunds on the invoice.
  • Calendar blocks. Create and remove blocks, with linked properties and channels updated automatically.
  • Cancellations. Preview the fee and refund, then cancel direct and Vrbo reservations.
  • Automated messages. Turn individual automated messages on or off for a booking.
  • Housekeeping. Review upcoming turnovers and assign, reassign, or unassign housekeepers.

Every action that changes data needs Write Tools enabled and follows your team member permissions. Cancellations, refunds, payment requests, and block removals always ask you to confirm first. One subscriber's assistant can never see another subscriber's data, every query is logged in your account, and you can cut access at any time. See everything Lodgix does.

The connection is one piece of a broader stance: practical built-in AI tools for everyday hosting work. Read more on the Lodgix AI page, compare vendors in the Lodgix vs Lodgify comparison and the comparison hub, or contact us with questions about your own setup.

How do you connect ChatGPT or Claude with the Lodgix MCP Server?

You connect in three steps, and your assistant never sees your Lodgix password.

  1. Turn on the MCP Server in your Lodgix account settings and choose what your assistant may do.
  2. Add Lodgix as a custom connector in ChatGPT, Claude, or another MCP client. Server URL: https://mcp.lodgix.com/mcp. Transport: Streamable HTTP. Authentication: OAuth 2.0.
  3. Sign in with your Lodgix login and approve the access.

Questions we hear most

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside data and tools. Instead of pasting data into a chat, the assistant queries a server that exposes only the capabilities its owner chose to expose, with the permissions and scoping enforced on the server side.

Is it safe to paste guest data into ChatGPT or Claude?

It's a bad habit. Pasted data leaves your system with no access control, can't be revoked, and goes stale immediately. A scoped, revocable, read-only connection gives an assistant the same answers without those problems.

Can an AI assistant charge a guest's card through Lodgix?

No. The Lodgix MCP Server never charges or refunds a card. It can email the guest a secure payment link, and a recorded refund only updates the invoice.
